The fire ignited around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, inside a two-story home in the 3800 block of Hebron Terrace in Abingdon, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

Before the fire, a resident noticed a tripped breaker and reset it, investigators said. Moments later, she smelled smoke and saw flames spreading behind a basement couch.

She quickly alerted her family, and they all escaped— including her 2- and 3-year-old children—before flames could spread, officials said.

Abingdon Fire Company crews arrived within minutes, containing the fire to the basement and stopping it from spreading further, investigators said.

A 59-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she is expected to recover.

Officials ruled the fire accidental due to an electrical failure. It caused $50,000 in damage and left the home uninhabitable due to heavy smoke and soot.

The Harford County Disaster Assistance Team is helping the displaced family.
